Lydia Yankovskaya—the 2018 recipient of the Lang Assael Conducting Fellowship—will be with the LPO in London in late February. Meanwhile Karina Canellakis, the previous recipient, won a critics’ award for her performances around the world in 2018 with her LPO debut singled out for particular praise.

Vladimir Jurowski Celebrates 10th Anniversary as Principal Conductor

Vladimir JorowskiThe 2016–2017 season marks Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Vladimir Juroski’s 10th Anniversary with the LPO. One of today’s most sought⏻after and dynamic conductors, acclaimed worldwide for his incisive musicianship and adventurous artistic commitment, Maestro Jurowski was born in Moscow, and completed the first part of his musical studies at the Music College of the Moscow Conservatory. In 1990 he relocated with his family to Germany, continuing his studies at the High Schools of Music in Dresden and Berlin. In 1995 he made his international debut at the Wexford Festival conducting Rimsky-Korsakov's May Night, and the same year saw his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, with Nabucco. He was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2003, becoming the Orchestra’s Principal Conductor in September 2007. His position is generously supported by the Tsukanov Family Foundation.

First Recipient of the LPO/Jullliard Conducting Fellowship Announced

Karina CanellakisViolinist Karina Canellakis, the first recipient of the London Philharmonic Orchestra/Jullliard conducting fellowship has committed to engaging in conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the 2017/2018 season.

The first Julliard Conducting Fellowship was funded by our own AFLPO member and former Chair of the AFLPO Board of Directors, Christina Lang–Assael.

New Recordings Revisit Past Conductors

During the past Christmas season, the LPO drew attention to two fabulous new recordings that take listeners down memory lane with performances by two eminent Principal Conductors of the past:

Klaus Tennstedt’s recording of Act I of Wagner’s Die Walkure was recently named as one of the top ten classical re–issues of 2016 by The Sunday Times.


Kurt Masur’s live performances of Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos 1 & 4 provide an opportunity to remember the Maestro’s very best work with the Orchestra just a year on from his death in 2015.
